Classic Good Looks

Book covers for classics, designed by Conor & David, published by ROADS PublishingNew Irish venture ROADS Publishing has teamed up with designers Conor & David to create these beautiful new editions of classic literature.

There are ten titles in the series (pictured clockwise from top left): Wuthering Heights by Emily Brontë, Notes From the Underground by Fyodor Dostoyevsky, The Picture of Dorian Gray by Oscar Wilde, To the Lighthouse by Virginia Woolf,  The Hound of the Baskervilles by Arthur Conan Doyle,  Frankenstein, or The Modern Prometheus by Mary Shelley, The Great Gatsby F Scott Fitzgerald,  Heart of Darkness by Joseph Conrad, The Scarlet Letter by Nathaniel Hawthorne, and Madame Bovary by Gustave Flaubert.

My favourite story of the ten is Conrad’s Heart of Darkness. Conor & David explain the thinking behind the creepy antique insect cover; “A dark and encapsulating specimen of a heart-shaped fly represents the imprisoning, barbaric and desperate nature of imperialism on its journey on a river of discovery and extermination.”Spine shot of ROADS Publishing 2013 Classic series

However, my favourite cover of the ten has got to be lasercut paper design for Virginia Woolf’s To The Lighthouse; “Layers of cut paper, rotating on a central axis, make up a mesmerising clockwork sea that separates the Ramsey family from the inaccessible beacon of light on the opposite side of the bay.”. Gorgeous!

Hear more from the Dublin-based design duo in the clip below. It’s great to hear of a fresh Irish project, good luck to the team at ROADS.
